As we age we lose strength in our muscles and bones with an acceleration of this loss after the age of 50. This negatively affects the functional capacity of our bodies leading to everyday activities becoming more difficult and a predisposition to stiffness, poor posture and ultimately injury.
Yet this loss of muscle and bone strength is not inevitable and can be reversed with the regular practice of resistance training. Resistance training also addresses the physical decline associated with the menopause and is key to the pro-active management of many chronic conditions including osteoporosis and arthritis.
Many people fear this type of exercise believing it to be for a certain sort of person or that it is unsafe after a particular age. FIT4FIFTY+ addresses these misconceptions and provides a safe and effective range of resistance training programmes specifically designed for adults over fifty and/or those living with chronic medical conditions.
All programmes are evidence-based and follow national and international guidelines resulting in programmes that optimise muscle and bone health while minimising the risk of injury. The programmes are delivered in our gym in Ballinderreen, County Galway.
